Junior Treekeepers: A Model Program

The City of Kirkwood's Junior Treekeeper Program has been selected by the National Arbor Day Foundation for its annual Education Award. This award recognizes the Kirkwood Junior Treekeepers Program as a model program in the United Station and internationally.

The Junior Treekeepers program, coordinated and managed by the Kirkwood Urban Forestry Commission (KUFC), in cooperation with the Kirkwood School District and St. Peter Catholic School, teaches students the value and environmental importance of trees.

Third- and fourth-grade participants learn how to care for trees from the trained adult volunteers who participate in the program. For the current school year, 210 Kirkwood third grade students benefited and will receive achievement certificates from the Treekeepers program. This brings the total of participating students to 1,850, since the program's inception in 2000.

Key funders and donors for the program include the 25 Gardeners Club, Kirkwood Kiwanis, The Webster-Kirkwood Times, Kirkwood Garden Club, Rowena Clark Garden Club, Kirkwood Optimists, Kirkwood Lions Club, Skinner Enterprises, Jeffery Ponfils, Kirkwood Sign-O-Rama and Greenscape Gardens.

Ten representatives from KUFC, Junior Treekeeper volunteer instructors, and community leaders will accept the award on April 25 at the National Arbor Day Foundation awards program in Nebraska City, Neb.
