More than 80 artists of all ages spread out across Webster Groves on Saturday, May 12, and painted the town en plein air (in the open air).

The artists participated in the 6th annual Paint Webster, a program of the Webster Community Arts Foundation. The competition was the largest to date, and artists came from up to three hours away. The reception was attended by about 300 people, who viewed works by both professional and amateur artists at the Monday Club.

Shawn Cornell, a local plein air artist, took first place, winning $500. He was also the winner of the Peoples' Choice Award. Benjamin Guffee received second place and Scott Petty, third place.

In the Children's Category, Sam Sheppard took first place, and in the Youth Category, Alexandra Wieselman took first.

Multiple awards totaled more than $1,700. Webster University sponsored Paint Webster and many local businesses contributed: Straub's Manager Steve Hunkins, Yucandu, Old Orchard Gallery, Krueger Pottery, Grafica and Major Brands Inc.

As part of a new pre-event, Anne Molasky Ibur, local portrait and plein air artist, helped children experience plein air painting through a children's workshop at Gazebo Park in Old Orchard.

Paintings from Paint Webster will be on view until May 19 at the Old Orchard Gallery, 37 S. Old Orchard Ave. An artists' reception will be held on May 18 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. It is free and open to the public. Many of the paintings are for sale by the artists.
