Webster Boys Volleyball Fall Short In State Semifinal Game

May 18, 2012
Webster Groves High School senior volleyball players were expecting to miss their high school graduation on Friday, May 18. They expected to be playing in the Class 3 Missouri State Championship that same evening at Lindenwood University.

Instead, Fort Zumwalt South upset the top-seeded Statesmen, 25-22 and 25-20, in the state semifinals on May 17 at Kirkwood High School. The Bulldogs will face Bishop DuBourg, which defeated second-seeded Affton, 25-22 and 27-25, in the other state semifinal.

The Bishop DuBourg/For Zumwalt state championship game is May 18 at 6 p.m. on May 18 at Lindenwood University.

Webster Groves (29-3-1) lost in the state semifinals for the last three seasons and in state quarterfinals four years ago.

In the first game, Webster Groves trailed by as many as seven points, but never could get any closer to 24-22. In the second game, Webster Groves jumped out to a 10-3 lead, but Fort Zumwalt South went on a 9-0 run and outscored the Statesmen, 22-10, the rest of the way to advance to the state finals.

"We couldn't get over the hump," said four-year player Ryan Mahl said. "It wasn't meant to be. I didn't want to go out like this. There isn't anything we can do about it now. I guess we left a legacy, but we couldn't get over the hump."
