A slow beginning led to a strong finish for Affton High School in the 2012 boys volleyball season.

Off to a 1-3 start, Affton has shown why it is a strong Class 3 state contender this season. The Cougars (28-4-1), seeded second behind top-seeded Webster Groves High School in the Class 3 state tournament, have gone 27-1-1 since the slow start, which includes winning its last 18 matches.

The winning streak includes capturing the Class 3 District 2 tournament title at Westminister on May 11 and dumping Kirkwood in the state quarterfinals on May 15 at St. Louis University High School (SLUH).

Affton was scheduled to play Bishop DuBourg on Thursday, May 17, at Kirkwood High School. Should Affton win, the team would advance to the state finals on Friday, 6 p.m., at Lindenwood. In the state final game, Affton will meet the winner of Thursday's game between Webster Groves High School and Fort Zumwalt South.
