The 8th Annual Hands On Kirkwood, a local volunteer one-day mission blitz, takes place on Saturday, Oct. 4.

Volunteers will meet at Kirkwood Baptist Church, 211 N. Woodlawn in Kirkwood, at 8 a.m. for bagels and coffee, then in the Sanctuary at 8:30 am to kick off the day. Volunteers may sign up at www.handsonkirkwood.org, or show up Saturday morning and a volunteer duty will be assigned. There are currently more project requests than available volunteers.

Among the free Hands On Kirkwood activities this year will be the winter clothing, toy and book store and the winter car check. These activities are at Kirkwood Baptist Church, 211 N. Woodlawn in Kirkwood.

At 10 a.m. there will be a Blessing of the Animals at Grace Episcopal Church, 514 E Argonne Drive.

The Kirkwood-Oakland Day Out will be located behind the police station at 131 W. Madison Ave. from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Free electronic recycling (limit of two old style TVs per car) and paper shredding (two boxes per car) will be held at Meramec Community College at Big Bend and Couch.

While those events are going on, hundreds of volunteers will be in the community working on home projects for the elderly, cleaning up historic Father Dickson Cemetery and removing honeysuckle from Kirkwood Park. Youngsters will visit a local nursing home taking hand-made lap robes and singing songs.

Volunteers will also be going door-to-door in Kirkwood collecting canned goods and baby items for Kirk Care and Nurses for Newborns. Residents are encouraged to place a bag or two on their front porch on Saturday, Oct. 4.

To donate canned goods or baby items, drop them off until the morning of Oct. 4 at Kirkwood Baptist Church.
