Police Apprehend Robbers of Area Schnucks/Dierbergs

February 15, 2013
The Des Peres Public Safety Department played a major part in apprehending three people accused of 14 area bank robberies, which included two First Bank branches located in the Des Peres Schnucks, 12332 Manchester Road.

The robberies in Des Peres occurred Nov. 7, 2012, and Jan. 3, 2013.

A department press release stated that a joint investigation by the Brentwood, Creve Coeur, Des Peres, Florissant, Maryland Heights, Overland, St. Louis County, and Jefferson County police departments resulted in the arrest of three persons suspected to have committed these robberies from U.S. Banks and First Bank branches located inside area Schnuck's and Dierbergs grocery stores.

Those charged with robbery in the first degree are Latonya Jones, Berkeley; Michael Abbott, Florissant; and Damon Marlon Gibbs, Ferguson.

On Jan. 12, Abbott was charged with robbing the U.S. Bank inside the Schnuck's store in Maryland Heights, and Gibbs was charged with the robbery of the First Bank inside the Dierbergs store at 8450 Eager Road in Brentwood.

Warrants have not yet been issued on the individual who robbed the Des Peres Schnucks, according to Capt. Charles Milano with the Des Peres Police Department.

The investigation is continuing and additional charges could be filed.

According to Department Detective Lt. John Stegman, when the person accused in the most recent Schnuck's robbery left the store, a man took out his phone and videotaped him as he was driving off.

"This gave us a break in getting license numbers," Stegman said. "The department joined the task force with the other municipalities who had experienced similar robberies. When we got together, we each had a piece of information and we put it all together, resulting in solving the robberies."
